PostSubject: Hankook MT RT03 tires    Hankook MT RT03 tires Icon_minitimeThu Aug 09, 2012 9:41 am

After looking at tires for countless hours and admiring the KM2's, Mickey Thompson MTZ, Toyo MT, Nitto Trails and Hankook MT I have come to the conclusion that I really like tires and would like to give the Hankooks a shoot. This is my daily driver that goes wheeling in rocks, trees, mud, trail type terrain a couple times a month. After reading good reviews and getting positive feed back from some folks running these Hankooks I decided to pull to the trigger and ordered a set.

Size, I will be running is a 33" in a 285/75R16. They also make a very tempting 295/75R16 Smile. Since I have 17' now I have decided to get new wheels and keep my stock set for back up. I have asked for several folks opinons on 16" wheels they're using and I wanted to thank everyone for there help and patience with all of my questions.

as for the wheels I really wanted the Method or Raceline wheels. The Methods are becoming very popular on here but they are a little pricey for me. The Raceline Renegade 6 is the design I really liked the most and I have found a very semilar wheel and getting a very good deal on them as well.

Size, 16X8.5 with a -6 offset

Here is a picture of the wheel:

You go Bobby. I like the Hankooks, looked at them a while myself before getting the Falkens. That set-up will look awesome on your truck.

Those look beastly especially the 295s on the black bullet hole wheels!

I have been looking at the 295/75/16s as a possibility for next Summer. My only concern is they are only 2-ply sidewalls. I will definitely watch to see how these pan out for you. This tire/wheel combo will look great on your rig!

Brian, I initially thought that they had a 3 ply side wall but I do not think they do. I did get an E load range so that will help. I am not to worried about that though the side walls are very thick and reinforced with extra rubber. It is also a special compound unique to the tire that Hankook's use. These puppies are 4-5lbs heavier then other m/t's in it's class. Just not as heavy as the Toyo m/t Smile

Actually, I am pretty sure these have a 3 ply side wall. May be because of the E load range though.

Good read on these from Four wheeler mag http://www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/wheels/129_1104_mud_tire_shootout_first_place_hankook_dynapro_mt/

Yeah, I like the tire. I am not sure where I was reading, but it had the 295 as a 2 ply. I will try to see if I can find it. Being an E load is more important. Keeps the tire from squashing so much when you air down.

I can't find where I thought they were only a 2-ply. I am most likely am wrong. Looking forward to seeing how they work for you and the mpg you get.

Well you may be right, I am not completely sure they have a 3ply side wall. I am sure they will do just fine though. I'll let you guys know once I get them on!

Mike, super stoked about getting these! I have 2 tires that have internal belt/chord seperating and they're getting worn so it was time for an upgrade! I will report back on these once installed. I am hoping they will last me a while too but I know it's a m/t. I will report back on the long term usage as well.

Well I hope you are right Bobby. I really liked the 295s, but was deterred when I thought they were 2-ply. Now I will have to consider them again. scratch Getting some insight from yours will definitely be good.

Well to my surprise they showed up on Friday. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face like some new tires Smile These are very true to there size at 33.1" tall and 11.5" wide. These look beastly in person! The side walls pattern sticks out about an 1/8 of an inch. In between the outer side walls gapping measures 1.25" and the inside thread patterns gaping is just under 1". They are also very heavy weighing 64 lbs per tire and the wheels weigh 23lbs bring it to a total of 87 lbs per tire. I installed them on Saturday and they fit and look great! I did not use the center caps on them as they stick out to far. I think it looks better with out them.

They looked like they fit no problem until I backed up out of the drive way and clakclakclak!!! Rubadubdub all in my fender liners, bumper and rear bottom portion of my fenders and pinch weld area. Good thing I chopped the Body Mounts. I cut most of the fender liner out and may just pull them completely. I trimmed about 3" out of the front bumper and about 2.5" out of the rear lower portion on the fenders. I hammered the pinch welds as flat as I could get them with out a BFH and bent back the wierd metal piece behind the plastic fenders in the bottom corner.

On the rear I just removed the trimmed mud flap off and it seems to clear but I may need to trim back the bottom portion of the rear bumper.

I will need to do the following:

1) hammer the pinch welds flatter

2) cut and trim the metal piece behind the plastic fender

3) possible cut the tips of my sliders back and recap them.

I got it street safe and it doesn't rub under mild flexing but I know it will once I stuff that puppy up in the fender well off roading!

Initial impressions, On the street they feel pretty good, very responsive and grippy. Turns feel stable and secure. From a start you can feel the lugs a tad and I can get up to speed no problem. The rpms are pretty close to stock at hwy speeds just a hair higher. I know I am losing about 1.5-2 mpg's though. At high speeds they seem a little squirmy but I think I need to bump down the tire pressure. I have it around 50 psi and I will take it down to around 45-40 psi.

Noise, you can hear them but it is not bad. It is kind of like a small air craft or something and I actually like it! You can start to hear them around 20mph and they're loudest around 40mph but again it is not bad. Just enough to know they are there. I should of got a M/T sooner

Braking, my braking seems fine pretty close to stock. I can feel the heaviness of the tires when braking but no problems with the stock brakes. They feel great.

I have some drive way shoots that I will post up hopefully tonight. Very Happy

Thanks guys! I am really loving these tires and I should of made the jump to an m/t sooner! I can't come out to play for a little while though, our wekends are getting booked up and the little guy is coming soon. This Sat we have a baby shower we need to attend together. Next Saturday we have birthing classes all day. I know Lisa can't go out off roading anymore and I don't really want to leave her alone. I may have to come out soon though I am jonesin for some trail action! lol,
