HWY 550 into Ouray Colorado

I didn't think to shoot video of this stretch of highway, but I found a vid...

I was thinking about this after seeing the road featured on the History Channel on a special called "most dangerous roads..."

This is the road we took from Durango to Ouray....

Posting this for those that are interested and may make the journey to an FJ Summit sometime in the future...

So this hwy is considered as a "most dangerous rd"?
I am assuming for reasons such as falling rocks and the cliff side?

Yeah, some of the areas where there are no guard rails are actually 1,000 ft drop offs....there are go guard rails so they can push snow off the road in winter.

Then there is winter driving.....

There are drivers that try to "speed" on that road and produce baaaad results.

Rock slides are another issue and that "bridge" shown in the video was actually eroded away while we were there and they were working on replacing it....that was interesting as it reduced the road to one lane and there was this "stop light" set up to control traffic.....
